Cottagewood General Store:
Overview

The Cottagewood General Store, nestled in the small community of Deephaven, Minnesota, is a historical landmark that has been serving the local community and visitors since its establishment in 1895. This quaint store has not only provided goods and services but has also become a central hub for community life and celebrations.

Founding and Early Years

The store was originally opened by Ralph M. Chapman as a grocery store catering to the needs of cottage and hotel guests who spent their summers along the shores of Lake Minnetonka.
The area of Cottagewood in Deephaven was platted in 1876 by Susan and Samuel Gale, with Samuel Gale being a Minneapolis real estate agent and civic leader.  The community of Cottagewood quickly became a tourist destination, especially during the heyday of Lake Minnetonka in the 1880s and 1890s.

The Store's Evolution

Over the years, the Cottagewood General Store has adapted to the changing needs of the community. It has offered a variety of services including groceries, gasoline, fine dining, catering, and the sale of lake-related gifts and Cottagewood-themed merchandise.  The store has been a witness to many historical events, including the burning down of the Hotel Keewaydin in 1924 and a tornado in 1965 that caused significant damage to the community.

Preservation and Community Efforts

In 1995, the store was closed and put up for sale, which raised concerns among the residents about the future of this historic site.   In response, a group of neighbors came together to save the Cottagewood General Store, ensuring that its charm and historical significance would be preserved for future generations.  This effort led to the establishment of the Cottagewood Community Foundation (CCF) in 1998, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization supported by over 206 member families.

The Store Today

Today, the Cottagewood General Store continues to be a vibrant part of the community. It is open daily during the summer months and hosts a variety of events such as an Easter egg hunt, lawn sales, a July 4th celebration, Oktoberfest, Halloween trick or treating, and a visit from Santa during the Season of Lights.  The store also features Grill Nights or food trucks on Fridays during the summer, where community members can gather and socialize.
The Cottagewood General Store has become more than just a place to shop; it is a place where residents and visitors can enjoy a cup of coffee or an ice cream cone, participate in community events, and experience the nostalgia of a bygone era. It stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of the Cottagewood community and its commitment to preserving its history and fostering a sense of togetherness.

The Cottagewood General Store is a cherished institution that encapsulates the essence of American small-town life. Its history is a reflection of the community's resilience and dedication to maintaining a connection to its past while continuing to serve as a gathering place for friends, neighbors, and visitors alike.
